Do these 5 things to get promoted

  1. Build the right relationships. Who are they? They are the people who hold power in your organization and those who influence them. Secure reoccurring meetings with them, and then follow tips 2–5.

  2. Be curious (and humble). There’s a lot you don’t know that these leaders could teach you. When you have time with them, be sure to ask thoughtful questions about other parts of the business, about how things work, about their career, about the vision of the company, about industry trends, etc. You get the point.

  3. Think like an owner. Talk about your ideas that could add value to the business. Mention your solutions for a business challenge. Use “we” language to position yourself as “one of them.”

  4. Develop others. Climb the ladder and throw down the rope. I know your day is busy, but do make time for growing future talent. It’s a sign of a true leader. To do so, seek to learn about where and how your team members want to grow. From there, create development plans with them. Share in the ownership since you both stand to benefit.

  5. Flaunt. If you want to get promoted, you must promote yourself. This means talking about your talents and wins out loud to other people (specifically senior leaders). I know this sounds uncomfortable and scary, but how else will they know about your brilliance and successes? Believe it or not, there’s nothing wrong with saying nice things about yourself out loud. It’s not arrogant; it’s confidence.
