Do these 5 things to improve speaking when unprepared

  1. Be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that no one knows everything. It’s okay to talk in draft form; we do that in personal conversations yet are more cautious in professional ones. Perhaps this is because personal relationships are safer. Yes, you’re managing risk, but the greater risk is sitting on ideas so long that they time out.

  2. Contribute. Remember that sharing your ideas is more important than getting it right. You don’t have to wait until your idea is 100% perfect before sharing it with others. It could be that you offer an idea that is 70% thought-through and, through collaboration, others add to your idea, bringing it to a full 100%.

  3. Trust yourself. Check your motive and objectives for what you’re about to say and then speak. When you speak from a place of truth and integrity, you can trust that what you say will be great.

  4. Be confident. Many people are only able to sound confident when they’re well prepared. Access the same confidence when speaking off-the-cuff by saying what you do know with confidence.

  5. Take your time. Slowing your speaking pace allows your brain to deliver the best ideas with your strongest vocabulary.
